Leaving mold on walls and ceilings can lead to even more mold or damage to the house. But is painting over the mold an option?

We assembled three contractors and mold prevention experts to help determine whether you can paint over mold in your home.

Can You Paint Over Mold?

Painting directly over mold is not recommended, say the experts.

"You cannot paint over mold as a remediation effort," says HomeCleanse founder Michael Rubino. "Even if the mold is dead, you still do not want to paint over it to deal with the contamination."

But don't some contractors paint over mold anyway?

Yes, technically, you can paint over mold, says painting expert Carr Lanphier.

"I’ve definitely seen people do this," Lanphier says. "But in my experience, it’s not going to work when it comes to actually solving your mold problem."
